Babies in all traditional cultures were carried in a cloth tied to the back, front or hips. Other devices for carrying babies included baskets, cradleboards, portable cradles and travois. In the 1960s the use of slings once again became popular with the introduction of structured soft pack. Toddlers and older babies began to be carried on frame pack. In the 1980s the ring sling became popular. Pouch carriers were introduced in the 1990s. Prams or perambulator has been in use since the Victorian era in the United Kingdom but are not common today. A stroller is also known by the name buggy. It is used to carry babies and young children up to the age of three. It looks almost like a seat or chair on four wheels. The baby is held to the stroller by a harness to make sure that the baby is safe and does not fall off. The harness holds the baby safe and sound to the stroller. There are the three point harness and the five point harness. The harness goes around legs, waist or shoulders of the baby. The stroller includes either a hand break or a foot break. If more than one child is to be carried, there are strollers that can carry two kids one behind the other or side by side. There are also triple strollers that can carry three children.

There are different kinds of strollers. For the older kids there are the umbrella strollers. These have no sun canopy. Nor are there any storage facility. They also have very little padding. Naturally these are also cheaper and the lightest as well. The standard strollers come with sun canopy. They have well padded seats and large storage compartments. They are also heavier and costlier. The travel system stroller is a standard stroller incorporated with a car seat. It is easier to lift the baby harnessed to the car seat from an automobile to the stroller without disturbing or securing to a car from the stroller. The jogging stroller is the latest entry into the market. It is a standard stroller with three large wheels as a replacement for the standard four wheels. This is to keep the stroller stable while being steered fast and on a rough terrain.
